Colonial New England Research.
We would like to find proof of the exact connection
between the American Culpepper progenitor, Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk,
VA and the English Culpepers. In this regard, we have recently retained the
services of three professional genealogists in New England to research 17th
century colonial records concerning (1)
The Culpeper Sisters of
Branford, Connecticut, (2) Two Ships
Named Culpeper, and Two Ships named Thomas and John, (3)
Culpepers in Massachusetts,
particularly in Roxbury, (4)
Culpeper House, Newport, Rhode
Island., and (5) Culpepers in the
East India Company. There were no significant breakthroughs, but we have
satisfied ourselves that future work on the American-English linkage must be
done through records resident in London. |
|
British Researcher Wanted.
As an extension of the above project, we are interested in retaining a
professional genealogist in London to research 16th and 17th century
Culpepers. For details, please contact
Warren Culpepper
(warren@culpepper.com). |

A solid new theory on the origin of the Culpepper
surname. For well over a century, historians, genealogists and
linguists have puzzled over and theorized about the origin of the Culpepper
name, the first known form of which was "de Colepeper". Now, thanks to
combining in-depth historical research with the scholarly contributions of
both Rob Culpepper (in 2007) and Matt Culpepper (in 2012), we believe we
have a defensible hypotheses on the
origin of the Culpepper surname. (Feb. 5, 2012) |

|
A Mayflower Connection. A handful of
Culpeppers have found a connection back to John and Priscilla Alden of the
Mayflower, and then
from the Aldens back down to the Alden's great-grandson, US President John
Adams. While no doubt there are many other Culpeppers whose ancestry can be
traced back to the Mayflower, this is the only connection that we
currently know. If you have a Mayflower connection, please give us
the details and we will add it. (Dec. 15, 2011) |

A Newly Discovered Culpepper Cousin:
Diana Princess of Wales Diana's 12th great-grandfather was John Culpeper of Wigsell (1531-1612).
Most modern-day Culpeppers also descend from John. This may make Diana your
13th cousin, more or less, depending on the number of ancestors between you
and John. Put a smile on your granddaughter's (or grandmother's) face and
tell her she has a real princess for a cousin. (Genealogical

Project. Over the past several months, a great deal of
behind-the-scenes effort has been expended on our DNA project. This
includes attending a genealogical DNA conference in Houston,
identifying potential project members, soliciting their membership,
organizing and analyzing test results and splitting out the family
into a larger number of smaller branches. We also continue to refine
some of our ancestral theories based upon the results of our DNA
testing. Currently there are 45 project members, and we are
targeting a total of 100 or more by the end of 2008. For a rewritten
and simplified explanation of what DNA testing is all about, how it
is helping us, and how you can help, see:
DNA. |

Why so
few recent updates. Regular visitors to this site will notice few
updates have been made in recent months. We haven't lost interest, but
one of our two publishers, Lew Griffin, has
been concentrating in recent months on his other family lines. The other
publisher, Warren Culpepper, has been
involved with the relocation to a new home in Atlanta as well as in the
training of a new Golden Retriever puppy. Expect to see an increased
level of update activity in the fall. |
