Winston County
History
Winston County was
created as Hancock County in 1850 from territory formerly in
Walker County. In
1858, the name was changed to Winston. Located in the northwestern part of the
state in the Appalachian Mountain Region, the county contains rich mineral
deposits. During the Civil War, Winston County gained notoriety due to its
reluctance to support the Confederacy.. Today a large portion of the county is
part of the William B. Bankhead National Forest. Winston is bordered by the
counties of Lawrence, Cullman,
Walker, Marion and
Franklin. The county seat, located in
Double Springs, is on US-278 about 60 miles northwest of Birmingham and 60 miles
southwest of Huntsville.
