History

Blount County was created by the Alabama Territorial legislature in 1818 from land ceded to the Federal government by the Creek Nation in 1814. It lies in the northeastern section of the state, generally known as the mineral region and is within the Southern Appalachian Mountain Region. Blount County is bordered by Cullman, Marshall, Etowah, St. Clair, Jefferson, and Walker Counties. The county is drained by the Locust and Mulberry Forks of the Black Warrior River. The Warrior coal field is located in Blount County. From 1818 to 1889, Blountsville served as the county seat, and after which time the seat was relocated to Oneonta. Oneonta lies midway between I-65 and I-59, about 40 miles northeast of Birmingham and 60 miles south of Huntsville.
