Dale County
History
Dale County was
formed in 1824 from Henry County. It is part of the
five-county southeastern corner of Alabama known as the Wiregrass, which is part
of the Southeastern Plains Region. Dale is
bordered by Pike, Barbour,
Henry, Houston,
Geneva, and Coffee counties.
Originally, the county seat was located at Daleville, but in 1870 it was
relocated to Ozark. The courthouses suffered damage by fire in 1869 and 1884.
Other towns and communities include Ariton, Newton, Midland City, and the U.S.
Army Base at Fort Rucker. Ozark is on US-231 about 20 miles northwest of Dothan
and 80 miles southeast of Montgomery.
