History

Greene County was created in 1819 from part of the Choctaw Cession of 1816. Located in the west-central portion of the state, between the Tombigbee and Black Warrior Rivers, it is in the Southeastern Plains Region. Greene is bordered by Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Hale, Marengo, and Sumter counties. The first county seat was located at Erie, now in Hale County. In 1838, the county seat was transferred to Eutaw. Other towns and communities include Clinton and Boligee. Eutaw is on I-20/59 about 40 miles southwest of Tuscaloosa, 85 miles southwest of Birmingham and 110 miles WNW of Montgomery.

Places

bullet

Culpeper Creek, (AKA Zion Creek), Greene Co., AL. About 40 miles southwest of Tuscaloosa, crossed by US-43 about 5 miles south of Eutaw, and runs east from there to the Black Warrior River. Most likely named for Alexander Culpepper (1792-1850) who settled in the area prior to the 1830 census and was granted a land patent there in 1831. Alexander was the son of John (and Barsheba Wright) Culpepper (1772-1818), and grandson of Erasmus Culpepper (1744-1783) of Edgecombe/Nash Co., North Carolina.
