Tuscaloosa County
History
Tuscaloosa County
was created in 1818 from Indian lands. In west central Alabama, its northeastern
half is in the Appalachian Foothills and the balance is in the Southeastern
Plains Region. Tuscaloosa is bordered by Fayette,
Walker, Jefferson,
Bibb, Hale,
Greene and Pickens. The county seat is Tuscaloosa, which is also home to the
University of Alabama. Other notable towns include Northport, Brookwood, Holt and
Coaling. Tuscaloosa is on I-20/59 about 60 miles southwest of Birmingham and 100
miles northwest of Montgomery.
