Choctaw County
History
Choctaw County was
created in 1847 from Sumter and
Washington counties and was named for the Choctaw
Indians, one of the four Indian groups that occupied what is now the State of
Alabama. The county is located in the southwestern part of the state in the
Southeastern Plains Region. It is
bordered by Sumter, Marengo,
Clarke, and Washington
counties, and the Mississippi counties of Lauderdale,
Clarke and Wayne. The
county seat, Butler, is about 30 miles
southeast of Meridian, Mississippi, ten miles west of the Tombigbee River, and
125 miles west of Montgomery.
