Alabama Culpepper Archives
St. Clair County
History
St. Clair County
was formed in 1818 from Indian lands. It is located in the north-central part of
the state in the Appalachian Ridge & Valley Region. St. Clair is bordered by
Blount, Calhoun,
Talladega, Shelby, and
Jefferson counties. It is the only
county in Alabama to have two county seats: Ashville and Pell City. Other towns
and communities include Ragland and Springville. Ashville is on I-59 about 30
miles north of Birmingham, and Pell City is on I-20 about 30 miles east of
Birmingham.
