Alabama Culpepper Archives
Barbour County
History
Barbour County was
created in 1832 from former Creek Indian territory and a portion of
Pike County. The county is located in the
southeastern section of the state in the Southern Coastal Plain. It is bounded
the counties of Henry, Dale,
Pike, Bullock and
Russell, and on the east by the Chattahoochee River
and the Georgia county of Quitman. The county seat was established in Louisville in
1833, and moved to Clayton in 1834. Today Barbour County contains two
courthouses - one in Clayton and one in Eufaula. Eufaula is on US-431 about 40
miles south of Columbus, GA and 80 miles southeast of Montgomery.
