Alabama Culpepper Archives
Houston County
History
Houston County was
created in 1903 from parts of Dale,
Geneva and Henry counties. It is part of the
five-county southeastern corner of Alabama known as the Wiregrass, which is part
of the Southeastern Plains Region. Houston is bordered by the Alabama counties
of Dale, Geneva and
Henry, the Florida county of
Jackson, and the Georgia counties of Early and
Seminole. The county seat, Dothan, was known as
Poplar Head prior to 1871. Other towns and communities include Cottonwood,
Ashford, and Webb. Dothan is at the intersections of US-84, US-231 and US-431,
and is about 100 miles southeast of Montgomery.
