Father* | Henry Culpepper Jr. of Norfolk Co., VA |
Mother* | Mary Richardson |
DNA* | Henry has been proven by DNA and genealogical research to be a descendant of Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk, VA, the American Culpepper progenitor.
Name-AltSpell | This surname is sometimes spelled Culpeper.
Will | 25 Jul 1698 | He is most likely "the child my wife goes with" mentioned in the will of his father, Henry Culpepper Jr. of Norfolk Co., VA at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 25 Jul 1698.1 |
Birth* | say 1699 | Henry was born at Norfolk Co., Virginia, say 1699. |
Will | 4 Jan 1709 | He was only nine years old, and so was not the Henry Culpeper whose land was mentioned in the will of John Creekmore at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 4 Jan 1709. That Henry was his deceased father, Henry, Jr., to whom Creekmore sold land in 1798. Deed Bk 9, p 80. Will of John Creekmore dated 4 Jan 1708/9 and proved 17 Aug 1711 by Emanuel Burgis. Various bequests including: "Unto my son John Creekmur Jr 50 acres of land lying between Richard Hodges and Henry Culpepper called by name of Horse Point...." Note that deeds often mentioned deceased individuals as adjacent land owners, as the description of the land was just copied from earlier records. Henry, Jr., had willed his Creekmore land to his son Thomas Culpepper, and Thomas was only about 13 or 14 years old at the time of John Creekmore's death and this reference to Henry's land in Creekmore's will. |
Will | 10 Nov 1716 | He witnessed the signing of the will of Thomas Richardson, his grandfather, on 10 Nov 1716 at Norfolk Co., Virginia. Although age 17 may seem like a young age for someone to be witnessing a will, there are other proven cases of men this young witnessing deeds and wills. It is important to note not only that Henry III signed with a mark, but also, that his mark was distinct from that of his father, Henry, Jr., and his grandfather, Henry. This mark is a block lettered "HC." The marks with which they signed documents helps distinguish the three early Henrys from each other.2 |
Probate | 29 Mar 1719 | He authenticated the validity of the will of Thomas Richardson. On 29 Mar 1719 at Norfolk Co., Virginia. |
Deed* | 18 Dec 1719 | He was granted a deed on 18 Dec 1719 at Norfolk Co., Virginia, 18 Dec 1719 -- Deed Bk 10, p 86. Order is granted Henry Culpepper for the sum of twenty shillings against the estate of Richard and Sarah Wright, etc. |

No estate or probate record for him as been found. Mary J. Culpepper, thought to be his widow, shows up in the next available Norfolk Tithable records in 1750, connected to Henry Culpepper IV of Currituck Co. NC and Jeremiah Culpepper of Norfolk Co., VA, presumably their sons.

Death* | after 1724 | She died at Norfolk Co., Virginia, after 1724. |
Biography* | Evidence that Henry Culpepper's wife was named Mary is based on two sources. One is the will of Henry's father-in-law, Thomas Richardson, which mentions several daughters including one named Mary: "unto my five daughters Marey Frances Margarett Ruith and Sarah one Shilling a peace and to ye heirs of my daughter Elizabeth one Shilling." (Norfolk Wills, proven March 1718/19). This shows that Thomas Richardson had a daughter named Mary. The second source is a deed transcript found in the book "Derivation of the Herbert Family," by Alice G. Walter. This deed transcript, dated 1699, of Willoughby to Herbert, is witnessed by William Maund and Mary (her "M" mark) Culpepper. At this early date, the only Mary Culpepper who would have been living in Norfolk County would have been Mary Richardson, wife of Henry Culpepper. That she was a Richardson is proven by Henry's 1699 will. The following deed shows that Mary was still living as late as 1724: 24 Feb 1724 -- Deed Bk F, p 132. Thomas Culpepper, cooper, and Ann his wife, to Henry Culpepper, cooper, for £25, 100 acres of the South side of Deep Creek, South Branch of the Elizabeth River. "Only my mother's thirds her lifetime." Wit: Faithful Cherry, Ruth Cherry, Ruth Suggs. Signed: Thomas Culpepper, Ann Culpepper. |

Will* | 29 Oct 1715 | He witnessed the signing of a will at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 29 Oct 1715. Will of William Dale, dated 29 Oct 1715 and proved 17 Feb 1715/6. Various bequests. Witnesses included Robert Culpepper and Edward Lewelling. (Richard Dale later witnessed Robert Culpepper's will.)7 |
Deed* | 1727 | He was granted a deed by John Winfield Jr. in 1727 at Western Branch District, Norfolk Co., Virginia, In 1727, Robert Culpepper bought 50 acres on the West Branch of the Elizabeth River from his cousin Jonas Winfield, for £10. (See will of Jeane Greene, Robert's grandmother).8 |
Will* | 16 Oct 1739 | He made a will at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 16 Oct 1739, naming as executor(s) Eleazer Tart Jr., naming as heir(s) Robert Culpepper Jr. of Lower Norfolk Co., VA, Joseph Culpepper of Edgecombe Co., NC, Benjamin Culpepper son of Robert, Rachel Wilder, Ann Wilder, Elizabeth Ward, Mury Green, William Culpepper of Warren Co. GA and Mary Tart. It was witnessed by Henry? Green. Robert's will, written in 1739 and proven in 1743, is important, as he and his brother Henry are the ancestors of most of the American Culpeppers. It is necessary to look at a copy of the actual document and not the abstract, to note that Robert had a son, Robert, Jr., to whom he gave his great Bible, his "lancets, horse flemes, and other instruments of iron for the use of horses." A fleam was a surgical knife, as was a lancet. Robert gave five Shillings each to his sons Joseph and Benjamin Culpepper, who by this time were in Edgecombe County, NC. He gave half a Crown each to his daughters Rachel Wilder and Ann Wilder. These small gifts of money indicate that Rachel and Ann had moved away from Norfolk County, and had probably already had some help along the way from Robert. He gave his daughter Elizabeth Ward, wife of John Ward, an ewe and a lamb, suggesting that she still lived nearby in 1743. And daughter Mury Green must have been nearby in 1743, as she received an ewe as well. Mury's husband may have been Henry Green (see below). At the moment, descendants of Mury Green are unidentified. However, there were folks named Green in early Edgecombe County, NC records. Robert Culpepper made a point of mentioning his grandson, William Culpepper, in his will. William got a cow and calf, and an ewe and lamb. Robert must have been particularly fond of William, since William got more live stock than Robert's daughters, Elizabeth Ward, and Mury Green. This was probably his grandson William, son of Robert Culpepper, Jr. Robert gave all his land in Norfolk County to "his loving daughter Mary Tart," and appointed her husband, Eleazer Tart, as his sole executor. Henry Green, John Joyce, and Richard Dale witnessed the will.9 |
Death* | circa 1742 | He died at Norfolk Co., Virginia, circa 1742. |
Probate* | 21 Jan 1743 | Probate action was taken on Robert's estate on 21 Jan 1743 at Norfolk Co., Virginia. |
Biography* | Robert Culpepper's ancestry was long the subject of speculation. However, DNA testing reveals that 80+% of the mainline Culpeppers descend from sons of Robert, and that the balance, with only a minor genetic difference, descend from the sons of Henry Culpepper, Jr. The most logical conclusion from traditional genealogical research and DNA testing is that Robert and Henry Jr. are sons of Henry Culpepper (Sr.) of Lower Norfolk Co., VA. and his wife Elizabeth. Robert was probably born around 1664 but it is not known if he was born in England or in Virginia. He probably married his wife around 1690. She may have been named Sarah, but her maiden name is not known. She was probably a daughter of one of the neighboring families along the West Branch of the Elizabeth River in Norfolk Co., VA. She and Robert had sons named Joseph and Benjamin, and Robert, Jr. Robert, Jr. was obviously named after his father. But the names Joseph and Benjamin were not used by Robert Sr.'s brother, Henry, and so might be clues to the identity of Robert's wife. These were family names in the local Richardson, Powell, Hodges, and Hollowell families, among others, all of whom lived nearby. According to "The Hollowells," by Lucy E. Hollowell, the Hollowells were Quakers, and none of the Hollowell daughters from this time period is known to have married a Culpepper. Robert finally emerges in Norfolk County records in 1692 when he bought 50 acres from Thomas and Elizabeth Green, for 2,000 pounds of tobacco. (Records on the Culpepper family in Norfolk County in the early 1700's are scarce, and all of the ones that we have found, including this one, are recorded above.) Robert Culpepper died circa 1742. He was close to 80 years old, which was well above average for his day and age. One could suspect that Robert's daughter Mary was the one who was looking after him in his old age, and so she was the one who was rewarded with Robert's land in his will.

(?) Ward
Male, #837, (say 1700 - )
Birth* | say 1700 | (?) was born say 1700. |
Biography* | Although the verdict is still out, and Ward family researchers have differing opinions, this writer wonders if Elizabeth Culpepper's husband might have been John Ward. This would have been the John Ward who was in Norfolk Co. VA in 1728, when he and Elizabeth sold 107 acres on the NE side of Simons Creek on the West Branch to William and Richard Price. This land was adjacent to the land William Ellis bought from John's brother Joseph Ward. The land being sold was purchased by John Ward from Roger Bryant. Witnesses were Tamer Spivey, Elizabeth Spivey, and John Lockhart (Norfolk Deeds, Bk. G, p. 105-6). He appears on a June 1736 tithable list for the Western Branch with his brother Joseph Ward. There are no surviving tithable lists for Norfolk County from 1737-1749. He does not appear in the 1750 list, however, his son (or brother) Joseph Ward is still in Norfolk in 1750, living near the Culpeppers. Further research is needed on John's brother, Joseph, as perhaps his wife was also named Elizabeth, and perhaps Joseph might have been the one who married Elizabeth Culpepper.

Death* | before 16 Oct 1739 | She died at Norfolk Co., Virginia, before 16 Oct 1739 Robert did not mention his wife in his will, and so she seems seems to have died earlier. |
Biography* | Based on the deed below, it has been suggested that Robert's wife may have been Sarah. However, Sarah was not mentioned in his will and was probably deceased at that time 6 Feb. 1746 -- Deed Bk 14, p 24, Peter Taylor and his wife, Dorcas, of Norfolk County, Va. to Richard Bunting of Norfolk Co. for 25 pounds current money a tract of 50 acres of land on the south side of the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River, in (Newby’s or Hubey’s) Neck joining the lands of John Joyce and Richard Taylor being the land said Richard Bunting sold to Peter Taylor. Sign. Peter Taylor and Dorcas Taylor (X), wit. Ralph (Fenter), SARAH CULPEPPER (X her mark), Elanor Tart. Transcribed by Clyde T. Colbert It is interesting to note that each of her sons, Robert, Jr., Joseph, and Benjamin, named a son Benjamin. In the case of Joseph and Benjamin, at least, it would appear that they each named their first born son, Benjamin. Various naming conventions were used by different cultures in the South, but in Virginia, first born sons were most often named after a grandfather. (See "Albion's Seed, Four British Folkways in America," by David Hackett Fischer.) So perhaps the father of Robert's wife was named Benjamin. The birth dates of Robert's children are largely speculative, and subject to revision from further research. Perhaps the order in which Robert names his children in his will offers us some guidance as to the order of birth. This writer prefers to use the known or approximate birth dates of children, to estimate the birth date of the parents. The dates one chooses, in either case, are going to be guesses, at best. If our current ancestral theory is correct, then one would hope that all of the male names used in this family, Robert, Joseph, and Benjamin, came from the distaff side of the Culpepper family, in some recent prior generation, as none of these names are Culpepper family names, in the branch of the Culpeppers from which we currently speculate that this line is descended. |
