Marriage* | say 1864 | She married Charles Artemus Shafer say 1864. |
Married Name | say 1864 | As of say 1864, her married name was Shafer. |
Biography* | | Glaenda Lane wrote: "Mary Elizabeth Williams was born about 1840 in Virginia and was in the the 1870 census in Norfolk County Virginia as the wife of Charlie Shafer, born in New York, with four year old Mary E, two year old son Adam and five month old son Woolsey. She does not show up in the 1880 census but Charles has a new wife, Margaret. They had 3 children together and apparently Margaret raised his children from his first marriage. (She also took in stepdaughter Mary E Shafer Culpepper's children when she died.) They had Nancy born 1878, Garfield A born 1880, Ethel born 1887, all in Norfolk County Virginia. Oral history places them in the Deep Creek area. Basing Charlie's second marriage to Margaret on the birth of their first child that would be about 1876 or 77. Mary was alive in the census of 1870 so she died sometime between June of 1870 and 1875 if we assume Charlie waited a decent length of time to remarry. All guesses until we get some documentation. If you are interested in getting more of the extended family for Charles and his children let me know and I'll send you an invitation to view the family tree. It is not my family but that of my sister-in-law. Most of the information is coming from the various census reports."1 |
