PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, MARRIAGES, 1859-1909 Compiled by Gail Burnell-Melchor glmbdm@aol.com From the City of Portsmouth Court Records FIRMAN Elizabeth McAlpine to CULPEPPER David Paul 03 Oct 1889
I do not have a date of death for Elizabeth. Harold was a mistake it was Herbert Culpepper.
Family lore: Culpepper Aunt Lizzie had a son named Carroll who went to New York as an opera singer. I don't know how much success he had. Lizzie had another son whose name was Herbert. Herbert and his wife Edna lived in Portsmouth. Herbert and Edna Culpepper didn't have any children. They were both very LARGE people. Not overly fat just BIG. They had a little dog that was completely dwarfed by either one of his owners when they picked him up. Our house wasn't far from Portsmouth so Herbert and Edna would come to visit from time to time.

The Smoaks Lumber Company was the first name and then Culpepper Lumber Company in Cottageville, SC: He was a well respected and extremely successful business man. He also built my homes in Walterboro and at Edisto Beach, SC. Each of his sons worked for him and so did my father for a time. |
