Erected in Point Pleasant Park, the memorial one of the few tangible reminders of the men who died at sea. Twenty-four ships were lost by the Royal Canadian Navy in the Second World War and nearly 2,000 members of the RCN lost their lives.

The monument is a great granite Cross of Sacrifice over 12 metres high, clearly visible to all ships approaching Halifax. The cross is mounted on a large podium bearing bronze panels upon which are inscribed the names of over 3,000 Canadian men and women who were buried at sea. The dedicatory inscription, and the text for John which is found on panel 7, says:

THEIR GRAVES ARE UNKNOWN BUT THEIR MEMORY SHALL ENDURE...

     He was born in St. Petersburg, FL, on December 25, 1948, to the late Robert and Blanche Culpepper. Brett graduated from St. Petersburg High School and received a degree in civil engineering from the University of Florida in 1971. He married Judy Flowers Culpepper the following year on September 23, 1972. Brett was a professional engineer (P.E.) and professional land surveyor (P.L.S.) and was a founding partner of Culpepper and Terpening, Inc. He was also a director of the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce GO Team, the predecessor of the Economic Development Council. Brett enjoyed golf, bridge, and Florida football. As an avid Florida fan, his love of the university was immortalized in the bricks of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
     Brett is survived by Judy, his wife of over 41 years, and three daughters and their spouses: Ceci and Nate Berman of Tampa, FL; Kelly and Chris Bender of Plano, TX; and Wendy Culpepper and Eric Mondschein of Tampa, FL. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Presley and Heath Berman, and Katarina and Ava Bender.
     A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Fort Pierce. A reception will follow at the Pelican Yacht Club in Fort Pierce at 4:30 p.m. Donations supporting Parkinson's patients, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Neuro Challenge Foundation, 4411 Bee Ridge Road # 246, Sarasota, FL, 34233.2
