South Carolina Culpepper Archives
Lancaster District/County
History
In the upper South
Carolina part of the Piedmont region, Lancaster County was formed in
1785 from Camden District. In 1798, Camden
District was abolished and several of its counties, including Lancaster,
became Districts. In 1868, Lancaster District was designated Lancaster
County. Its county seat, the town of Lancaster, is on US-521 about 35
miles south of Charlotte, NC, and 60 miles north of Columbia. Lancaster
County is bordered by the South Carolina counties of
Chesterfield,
Kershaw, Fairfield,
Chester and York, and
the North Carolina counties of Mecklenburg and
Union.
