Fairfield District/County
History
In the upper South
Carolina part of the Piedmont region, Fairfield County was formed in
1785 from Camden District. In 1798, Camden
District was abolished and several of its counties, including Fairfield,
became Districts. In 1868, Fairfield District was designated Fairfield
County. Its county seat, the town of Winnsboro, is west of I-77, about
60 miles south of Charlotte, NC, and 25 miles north of Columbia.
Fairfield County is bordered by the counties of
Chester, Lancaster,
Kershaw, Richland,
Lexington, Newberry
and Union.
