Chester District/County
History
In the upper South
Carolina part of the Piedmont region, Chester County was formed in 1785
from Camden District. In 1791, it became part
of Pinckney District, and then in 1798, when
the counties were abolished, it became Chester District. In 1868,
Chester District was designated Chester County. Its county seat, the
town of Chester, is 10 miles west of I-77, about 40 miles SSE of
Charlotte, NC, and 45 miles north of Columbia. Chester County is
bordered by the counties of York,
Lancaster, Fairfield
and Union.
