Mecklenburg County
County History and Geography
In the Piedmont Region and the south central part of North Carolina, Mecklenburg County was formed in
1762
from Anson County. Charlotte, its county seat and
largest city in the state, is on I-77 and I-85, about 130 miles southwest of
Raleigh. Mecklenburg is bordered by the North Carolina counties of
Gaston,
Lincoln, Iredell,
Cabarrus and Union, and the South Carolina counties of
York and
Lancaster.

Culpepper Connection: The first known Culpepper
male in Meckenburg County was Reuben
Culpepper from Norfolk, born
about 1821, the son of Joseph Culpepper, son of Sampson
Culpepper, son of Robert Culpepper, Jr., son of Robert
Culpepper, son of Henry Culpepper, son of John
Culpepper, the merchant from England. Also settling in
Mecklenbeurg were Reuben's son William E. Culpepper, and William
had a number of sons born in Mecklenburg. Culpepper Court may
have been named for a member of this family. Further research is
needed. |
