Kershaw District/County
History
In the upper South
Carolina part of the Piedmont region, Kershaw County was formed in 1791
from Camden District. In 1798,
Camden District was abolished and several
of its counties, including Kershaw, became Districts. In 1868, Kershaw
District was designated Kershaw County. Its county seat, the town of
Camden, is on I-20 about 65 miles south of Charlotte, NC, and 30 miles
ENE of Columbia. Kershaw County is bordered by the counties of
Lancaster, Chesterfield,
Darlington, Lee,
Sumter, Richland and
Fairfield.
