History

In the upper South Carolina part of the Piedmont region, the oldest town in the Chesterfield region is Cheraw, which was settled around 1748 by Welsh settlers from Pennsylvania and Delaware. They were later joined by Scotch-Irish and English settlers. Cheraw was a center for transportation along the Great Pee Dee River, but most of the county is agricultural. Chesterfield County was formed in 1785 from Cheraws District. In 1798, Cheraws District was abolished and some of its counties, including Chesterfield, became Districts. In 1868, Chesterfield District was designated Chesterfield County. Its county seat, the town of Chesterfield, is on SC-9, about 50 miles southeast of Charlotte, NC, and 75 miles northeast of Columbia. Chesterfield County is bordered by the South Carolina counties of Marlboro, Darlington, Kershaw and Lancaster, and the North Carolina counties of Union and Anson.
