South Carolina Culpepper Archives
Berkeley District/County
History
In the Carolina Low
Country, Berkeley County was formed in 1682 as one of four proprietary
counties, the others being Colleton,
Craven and Carteret. However, in the early years of South Carolina (1682-1769),
counties were used only for geographical divisions, and did not have
governmental functions. In 1706, parishes were set up and coexisted with
the counties. Today’s Berkeley County included all or parts of the
parishes of St. Stephens, St. James Santee, St. Johns Berkeley, St.
Thomas/St. Denis and St. James Goose Creek. In 1769, South Carolina was
divided into seven judicial districts which served as governmental
units. Charleston District was one of them.
In 1785, Charleston was divided into six counties, one of them being
Berkeley, but none of the counties became functional and they were
abolished in 1798. In 1882, Berkeley County was formed from
Charleston County. Its county seat, the
town of Moncks Corner, is on US-52, about 30 miles north of Charleston
and 80 miles southeast of Columbia. Berkeley County is bordered by the
counties of Clarendon,
Williamsburg,
Georgetown, Charleston,
Dorchester and
Orangeburg.
