Colleton District/County

History

In the Carolina Low Country, Colleton County was formed in 1682 as one of four proprietary counties, each bordering the Atlantic coast, and the Colleton part of the low country was known for its extensive rice and cotton plantations. In the early years of South Carolina (1682-1769), counties were used only for geographical divisions, and did not have governmental functions. In 1706, parishes were set up and coexisted with the counties. Today’s Colleton County was the parish of St. Bartholomew’s, and the original county also embraced the parishes of St. Paul and St. George Dorchester. In 1769, South Carolina was divided into seven judicial districts which served as governmental units. Charleston District was one of them, and it included St. Bartholomew's Parish, among others. In 1785, Charleston was divided into six counties, one of them being Colleton, but none of the counties became functional and they were abolished in 1798, at which time Colleton District was formed. In 1828 the first nullification meeting in the state was held in Walterboro. In 1868, Colleton District was designated Colleton County. Its county seat, the town of Walterboro, is on I-95, about 50 miles west of Charleston and 80 miles south of Columbia. Colleton County is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, and the counties of Beaufort, Hampton, Bamberg, Dorchester and Charleston
