South Carolina Culpepper Archives
Williamsburg District/County
History
In the eastern South
Carolina part of the Coastal Plains region, Williamsburg County was
formed in 1785 as a county of Georgetown District, but the county did
not become functional and in 1798 it was abolished. In 1802,
Williamsburg District was formed from Georgetown District, and in 1868,
it was designated Williamsburg County. Its county seat, the town of
Kingstree, is on US-52, about 60 miles north of Charleston and 80 miles
ESE of Columbia. Williamsburg County is bordered by the counties of
Florence, Marion,
Georgetown, Berkeley and
Clarendon.
