Craven County (1682-1769)

horizontal rule

History

Craven County was formed in 1682 as one of the four original Proprietary counties (the others being Berkeley, Colleton and Carteret/Granville). It roughly encompassed the area east and north of Charleston harbor that is the location today of Charleston and Berkeley counties. In 1769 the four proprietary counties were abolished in favor of seven new Judicial Districts, and the old Craven County became part of the Charleston District.
