Clarendon District/County
History
In the middle South
Carolina part of the Coastal Plains region, Clarendon County was formed
in 1785 as part of Camden District. In 1798, it
became part of Sumter District, and then all of
Sumter’s counties were abolished. Clarendon District was formed in 1855
from Sumter District, and in 1868, it was
designated Clarendon County. Its county seat, the town of Manning, is on
I-95, about 65 miles north of Charleston and 50 miles southeast of
Columbia. Clarendon County is bordered by the counties of
Sumter, Florence,
Williamsburg,
Berkeley, Orangeburg,
Calhoun and Richland.
