History

In the eastern part of the Carolina Low Country, English planters and their African slaves moved into the Georgetown region in the early eighteenth century, building large rice and indigo plantations. The town of Georgetown, which was established around 1730, was a busy port serving the surrounding plantations.  Georgetown District was formed in 1769 as one of seven original judicial districts. It encompassed the parishes of Prince George, All Saints, and Prince Frederick. During the Revolutionary War, the troops of General Francis Marion often hid in the swamps of Georgetown County while waging guerrilla warfare against the British. In 1785, Georgetown District was divided into four counties: Kingston, Liberty, Williamsburg and Winyaw. These counties never became functional, and in 1798 these counties were abolished. In the 1790 census, Georgetown District was divided up by its parishes. In 1798, Marion District was formed from Georgetown District, taking the entire county of Liberty. In the 1800 census, Georgetown District was divided up by county: Kingston, Williamsburg and Winyaw. In 1868, Georgetown District was designated Georgetown County. Its county seat, the historic town of Georgetown, is on US-17, about 60 miles northeast of Charleston and 100 miles ESE of Columbia. Georgetown County is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, and the counties of Charleston, Berkeley, Williamsburg, Marion and Horry.
