Humphreys County
County History
In
the Mississippi Delta region,
Humphreys is the
youngest of the Mississippi counties, and was created from parts of
Holmes, Washington,
Sharkey, Yazoo and
Sunflower, by act of the legislature
approved March 28, 1918. It was named in honor of Benjamin G. Humphreys,
a notable general in the army of the Confederacy and the first governor
of Mississippi to serve after the Civil War. Belzoni is the largest town
and the county seat.
Other towns include
Isola, Louise and Silver City.
Humphreys
was named
Farm-Raised Catfish Capital of the World in 1976 by then Governor Cliff
Finch, since it produces more farm-raised catfish than any other U.S.
county. As of 2000, its population was 11,206.
Humphreys County is
bordered by Sunflower County (north),
Leflore County (northeast),
Holmes County (east), Yazoo
County (south), Sharkey County (southwest)
and Washington County (west).
