Washington County
County History
Washington County, in the fertile Mississippi Delta
Region, was formed in 1827 from Warren and Yazoo Counties and named for
President George Washington. It was one of the numerous counties formed
from the so-called “New Purchase”, acquired from the Choctaws by the
1820 treaty of Doak’s Stand. Between 1844 and 1918, Washington
surrendered portions of its territory to help form the counties of
Issaquena, Bolivar,
Sunflower, Sharkey and
Humphreys. Greenville, the county seat, has
long been one of the largest and most prosperous towns in the State.
Other towns include Arcola, Hollandale, Leland and Metcalfe. As of 2000,
Washington County's population was 62,977. Adjacent counties are
Bolivar County (north),
Sunflower County (northeast),
Humphreys County (east),
Sharkey County (southeast), Issaquena County
(south) and Chicot County, Arkansas
(west).
