Sunflower County

      County History

		 Sunflower
County, located in the Mississippi Delta region, was formed in 1844 from
Bolivar County. In 1871, part of the county
was split off to help form Leflore County, and
its western and southern limits were extended at the expense of
		Bolivar and
Washington counties. In 1918, the southern side of Sunflower County
contributed to the newest county of Humphreys.
As of 2000, Sunflower County's population was 34,369. The county seat
and largest town is Indianola. Adjacent counties are Coahoma County
		(north), Tallahatchie County (northeast),
		Leflore County (east),
		Humphreys County (south), Washington County
		(southwest) and Bolivar County (northwest).
