Sharkey County
County History
Sharkey
County was formed in 1876 and named for Judge William L. Sharkey,
provisional governor of the State in 1865. Located in the Mississippi
Delta region, Sharkey was originally carved from territory belonging to
the counties of Warren, Washington and
Issaquuena. In 1918, it relinquished a part of its area to the new
county of Humphreys. As of 2000, Sharkey
County's population was 6,580. Its county seat is Rolling Fork, and
other towns include Anguilla and Cary. Adjacent counties are
Washington County (north),
Humphreys County (northeast),
Yazoo County (east), Issaquena County (south and
west).
