Yazoo County
County History
Yazoo
County was formed 1823 out of the large county of Hinds. Situated in the
fertile valley of the Yazoo River, it formed part of the territory
acquired from the Choctaws in 1820 known as the “New Purchase.” It thus
included within its original limits the present counties of Washington,
Holmes, Issaquena, and Sharkey, and parts of the counties of Madison and
Sunflower. In 1918 it made its last donation of territory to the new
county of Humphreys. Yazoo County is named for the Yazoo River, whose
name, legend has it, comes from an Indian word meaning "River of Death".
Farming and lumber are the predominant industries. In 1863 and 1864,
Yazoo County was a Civil War battlefield. In 1900, the famous railroad
disaster which killed engineer Casey Jones took place in Yazoo County.
The only county in the Yazoo City, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area,
Yazoo County's population is 28,149 (in 2000). The county seat and the
largest town is Yazoo City. Other towns include Benton, Bentonia, Eden,
Satartia, and Vaughan. Adjacent counties are
Humphreys County (north), Holmes County
(northeast), Madison County (east),
Hinds County (south), Warren County (southwest)
and Issaquena County (west) and Sharkey County
(northwest).
