      County History
      
		 Leflore 
		County, in the Mississippi Delta region, was formerly a part of
		Sunflower, Carroll 
		and Tallahatchie counties and was 
		established in 1871 during the administration of Governor Alcorn. It was 
		named for Greenwood Leflore, the principal chief of the Choctaw at the 
		time of removal. As of 2000, Leflore County's population was 37,947, and 
		it is part of the Greenwood, Mississippi Micropolitan Statistical Area. 
		The county seat and largest town is Greenwood. Greenwood, which calls 
		itself the Cotton Capital of the World, boasts the nation's second 
		largest cotton exchange. B.B. King, King of the Blues, was born near 
		Itta Bena at Berclair in Leflore County in 1925 and initiated his career 
		in the mid-1940s on a broadcast over Greenwood’s WGRM. Other towns 
		include Money, Morgan City, Schlater and Sidon. Leflore County is 
		bordered by Tallahatchie County (north), 
		Grenada County (northeast), Carroll County 
		(east), Holmes County (southeast),
		Humphreys County (southwest) and
		Sunflower County (west).
