Leflore
County, in the Mississippi Delta region, was formerly a part of
Sunflower, Carroll
and Tallahatchie counties and was
established in 1871 during the administration of Governor Alcorn. It was
named for Greenwood Leflore, the principal chief of the Choctaw at the
time of removal. As of 2000, Leflore County's population was 37,947, and
it is part of the Greenwood, Mississippi Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county seat and largest town is Greenwood. Greenwood, which calls
itself the Cotton Capital of the World, boasts the nation's second
largest cotton exchange. B.B. King, King of the Blues, was born near
Itta Bena at Berclair in Leflore County in 1925 and initiated his career
in the mid-1940s on a broadcast over Greenwood’s WGRM. Other towns
include Money, Morgan City, Schlater and Sidon. Leflore County is
bordered by Tallahatchie County (north),
Grenada County (northeast), Carroll County
(east), Holmes County (southeast),
