Burke County
History
In the Upper
Coastal Plains Region of Georgia, Burke County was formed in 1777 as an original
county previously organized in 1758 as the Parish of St. George. Its county seat,
Waynesboro, is on
US-25 about 175 miles ESE of Atlanta and 25 miles south of Augusta. Burke is bordered by the
Georgia counties of
Richmond, Jefferson,
Emanuel, Jenkins and Screven,
and the South Carolina counties of Aiken and
Barnwell.
