Barnwell District/County
History
In the western South
Carolina part of the Coastal Plains region, Barnwell District was formed
in 1798 from Orangeburg District. In 1868 it was redesignated Barnwell
County. Its county seat, the town of Barnwell, is on US-278, about 40
miles ESE of Augusta, GA and 60 miles SSW of Columbia. Barnwell County,
home of the US Department of Energy’s Savannah River Nuclear Site, is
bordered by the South Carolina counties of Aiken,
Bamberg and Allendale,
and the Georgia county of Burke.
