Aiken County
History
In the western South
Carolina part of the Sand Hills region, Aiken County was formed in 1871
from Edgefield, Orangeburg,
Barnwell and Lexington Counties. Its county
seat, the town of Aiken, is on US-1 and I-20, about 15 miles east of
Augusta, GA and 60 miles southwest of Columbia. Aiken County is bordered
by the South Carolina counties of Edgefield,
Saluda, Lexington,
Orangeburg and Barnwell, and the Georgia counties of
Richmond and Burke.
