Biography* | | Mary Matilda Ward Burgin and Thomas David Albertus Burgin lived in Troy, Pike County, Alabama. While the men were away during the Civil War, Mary had to take care of the farm and children. . A panther - probably short on groceries himself, after spooking Mary's stock, took up residence on the porch roof, screaming and generally making a nuciance of itself. Mary took the old muzzle loader and dispatched the noisy cat. . When TDA Burgin died in 1776, Mary moved to Hawkins, Wood County, Texas. She took her entire family with her, kit and kaboodle. All ten of her children and their husbands and wives and babies move to Hawkins. Mary wanted to be near family including the Texas Governor James Hogg. .
