Research note | 16 Jul 2008 | Ann Sokos wrote on 16 Jul 2008: "I have been wondering how Malcolm Culpepper and Fanny Greene met, her in Waterford, he a seaman from Virginia. I did come across an article that I found interesting. The crew of the "United States" from Norfolk, Virginia were forced into New London, Connecticut by the British. Trapped in New London, the crew transferred to the USS President in New York in early 1814. I wonder if Malcolm was part of this crew. Here is the article: War of 1812: While in Norfolk, Decatur encountered Captain John S. Garden of the new frigate HMS Macedonian. During a meeting between the two, Garden wagered Decatur a beaver hat that Macedonian would defeat United States should the two ever meet in battle. When war with Britain was declared two years later, United States sailed to join Commodore John Rodgers' squadron at New York. Putting to sea, the squadron cruised the east coast until August 1812, when it put into Boston. Returning to sea on October 8, Rodgers led his ships in search of British vessels. Three days after departing Boston, Decatur and United States were detached from the squadron. Sailing east, Decatur spotted a British frigate on October 28, approximately 500 miles south of the Azores. As United States closed to engage, the enemy ship was identified as Macedonian. Opening fire at 9:20 AM, Decatur masterfully outmaneuvered his adversary and methodically pummeled the British ship, ultimately forcing its surrender. Taking possession of Macedonian, Decatur found that his guns had inflicted 104 casualties, while United States had only suffered 12. After two weeks of repairs to Macedonian, Decatur and his prize sailed for New York, arriving to a massive victory celebration on December 4, 1812. Refitting his ships, Decatur put to sea on May 24, 1813, with United States, Macedonian, and the sloop Hornet. Unable to escape the blockade, they were forced into New London, CT by a strong British squadron on June 1. Trapped in port, Decatur and the crew of United States transferred to the frigate USS President at New York in early 1814. On January 14, 1815, Decatur attempted to slip through the British blockade of New York."9 |
Research note | 25 Jan 2010 | On 25 Jan 2010, Ann Sokos wrote: I was so excited to find the obituary of Frances Culpepper who married John Brown and Thomas Finley and wanted to share it with you. The obituary mentions her mother and father. Just a side note... Commodore Decatur was forced into New London (Thames River) on the USS United States and then transferred his men later to the USS President in New York, so the obituary is incorrect that it states that Malcolm met Frances while on the frigate USS President. Malcolm was to my belief an officer on both ships. Only the USS United States and USS Macedonian were blockaded in New London. I wish the obituary mentioned who Malcolm's family was!10 |

Obituary* | 18 Apr 1898 | Death of Mrs. Finley Mrs. Thomas Finley, one of the oldest and best known residents of Quaker Hill, died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. John Moore, just before midnight Sunday. Mrs. Finley was born at Quaker Hill January 29, 1815, and was consequently in the 84th year of her age. She had lived in this vicinity all her life and has been highly respected by all who knew her for her kind-heartedness and for the genuine Christian principles that actuated her everyday life. (This was followed by two paragraphs which further described her life and death) She is survived by three grandsons, Malcolm C. Brown, John D. Brown, Orrin Brown, and five granddaughters, Mrs. Jeanette Robinson Smith of New York, Mrs. Peter Taylor of New London, Mrs. John Moore of Quaker Hill, Mrs. Annie Brown of New London, and Miss Edith Brown of Quaker Hill. Mrs. Finley was twice married, her first husband being John Brown of Quaker Hill. Her second marriage took place about 28 years ago when she became the wife of Thomas Finley. Her maiden name was Frances Culpepper. Her father was Malcolm Culpepper, an officer on the United States frigate President, who became acquainted with her mother during the War of 1812 when he was in his vessel lying in the river. Mr. Culpepper was a Virginian and a member of one of the best families in the old dominion. Her mother was Frances Greene, a member of one of the oldest Waterford families which at one time owned nearly all of the land in the north end of the town. With such parentage... (more glowing remarks) The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the residence of Mrs. Brown.1 |
