Shelby County

County History and Geography

On the South Central Plains in a bulge of the Sabine River that separates it from Louisiana, Shelby was formed in 1836 as an original Texas county. The county seat and largest town is Center, which is 160 miles northeast of Houston. Shelby County is bounded by the Texas counties of Panola, San Augustine, Sabine, Rusk and Nacogdoches, and the Louisiana parishes of De Soto and Sabine.
