Liberty County (1785-1798)
Marion District/County
History
English settlers moved up the Great Pee Dee River into
this area in the eighteenth century. During the Revolutionary War
General Marion's men fought several skirmishes with the British here
before retreating to their camp at Snows Island.
In the eastern South
Carolina part of the Coastal Plains region, Liberty County was created
in 1785 as a part of Georgetown District.
In 1798,
Marion County was formed
from Liberty County, and In 1800 Marion became a
separate district.
In 1868, Marion District was designated Marion County.
Parts of Marion later went to form
Florence (1888) and
Dillon (1910) counties. In the twentieth century Marion County became a major tobacco growing
region.
Its county seat, the town
of Marion, is on US-76, about 100 miles NNE of Charleston and 100 miles
east of Columbia. Marion County is bordered by the counties of
Dillon,
Horry, Georgetown,
Williamsburg and
Florence.
