Sumter District/County
History
In the middle South
Carolina part of the Sand Hills region, Sumter District was formed in
1798 from Camden District. In 1868, Sumter
District was designated Sumter County. Its county seat, the town of
Sumter, is on US-76, about 80 miles north of Charleston, and 40 miles
east of Columbia. Sumter County is bordered by the counties of
Kershaw, Lee,
Florence, Clarendon
and Richland.
