Haywood County

County History and Geography

In the Blue Ridge Region and the western part of North Carolina, Haywood County was formed in 1808 from Buncombe County. Waynesville, its county seat, is on US-74, about 30 miles west of Asheville and 75 miles southeast of Knoxville, Tennessee. Haywood contains the easternmost part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is bordered by the North Carolina counties of Madison, Buncombe, Transylvania, Jackson and Swain, and the Tennessee county of Cocke.
