Buncombe County
County History and Geography
In the Blue Ridge Mountain Region and the western part of North Carolina, Buncombe County was formed in
1791
from Burke and Rutherford Counties. Asheville, its county seat, is on I-40
and I-26, about 100 miles east of
Charlotte. Buncombe is bordered by the counties of McDowell,
Henderson, Haywood,
Madison, and Yancey.
