Madison County

County History and Geography

In the Blue Ridge Region and in the western part of North Carolina, Madison County was formed in 1851 from Buncombe and Yancey Counties. Marshall, its county seat, is on US-25, about 15 miles northwest of Asheville and 70 miles east of Knoxville, Tennessee. Madison is bordered by the North Carolina counties of Yancey, Buncombe and Haywood, and the Tennessee counties of Unicoi, Greene and Cocke.
