Jackson County

County History and Geography

In the Blue Ridge Region and the southwestern part of North Carolina, Jackson County was formed in 1851 from Haywood and Macon Counties. Sylva, its county seat, is on US-441 and US-23, about 40 miles west of Asheville and 50 miles northwest of Greenville, South Carolina. Jackson is bordered by the North Carolina counties of Macon, Swain, Haywood and Transylvania, plus Rabun Co., Georgia and Oconee Co., South Carolina.
