Tallahatchie County
County History
Tallahatchie
County, located in the Mississippi Delta region, was formed in 1833 and
its Indian name means Rock River. Both Charleston, the largest city, and
Sumner are county seats. In 1909, the entire business section of Sumner
burned and all records were destroyed. Other towns include Glendora,
Philipp, Tutwiler and Webb. In 1955, the murder of Emmett Till in the
county was one of the key events that energized the nascent Civil Rights
movement. As of 2000, Tallahatchie County's population was 14,903.
Adjacent counties are Quitman County (north), Panola County (northeast),
Yalobusha County (east),
Grenada County (southeast),
Leflore County
(south), Sunflower County (southwest) and Coahoma County (northwest).
