 County History
		 Pontotoc
County, named for a Chickasaw chief, is one of the twelve large counties
created in 1836 from the Chickasaw cession of 1832. Regarded as a
“garden spot” by the pioneers seeking homes in the new Southwest,
emigrants from Virginia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, north Alabama and
Georgia, as well as from the older parts of Mississippi, rapidly settled
the region. In 1866, part of its eastern territory helped form the
county of Lee, and in 1870 other lands went to
form Union. Pontotoc, the county seat and largest town, was incorporated
in 1837. The United States land office was located in that place and the
town was fairly established at an early day. Other towns include Algoma,
Ecru, Sherman, Thaxton and Toccopola. Part of the Tupelo, Mississippi
Micropolitan Statistical Area, as of 2000, Pontotoc County's population
was 26,726. Adjacent counties are Union County (north),
		Lee County (east),
		Chickasaw County (south), Calhoun County
		(southwest) and Lafayette County (west).
