Lafayette County
County History
Lafayette
County was established in 1836, and was named in honor of the Marquis de
Lafayette (1757-1834), a French military officer who gave important aid
to the American Revolution. It is one of the dozen counties drawn from
the Chickasaw Indian lands in northern Mississippi following the Treaty
of Pontotoc. The local pronunciation of the name is either "la-FAY-et"
or "la-FET," varying by the speaker. The town of Wyatt, now extinct, was
on the supposed head of navigation of the Tallahatchie River. First
settled about the time of the Chickasaw cession, it became the shipping
point for a large section of country, with boats plying between it and
New Orleans. After the panic of 1887, the town decayed rapidly.
Lafayette County is often regarded as the inspiration for Yoknapatawpha
County, the fictional setting of many of William Faulkner's stories. As
of 2000, Lafayette County's population was 38,744. The county seat is
Oxford, which is also the home of the University of Mississippi,
commonly known as "Ole Miss". Other towns include Abbeville and Taylor.
Lafayette County is bordered by Marshall County
(north), Union County (northeast), Pontotoc
County (southeast), Calhoun County
(south), Yalobusha County (southwest),
Panola County (west) and Tate County (nothwest).
