Calhoun County
County History
Calhoun County was created
on March 8, 1852 from La Fayette,
Yalobusha and
Chickasaw counties. It was named for John C. Calhoun, the U.S. Vice
President and U.S. Senator from South Carolina. Its boundaries have not
been changed since it was established in 1852. As of 2000, the
population is 15,069. Its county seat is Pittsboro, and its court house
and all records were destroyed by fire on December 22, 1922. Other towns
include Big Creek, Bruce, Calhoun City, Derma, Slate Springs and
Vardaman. Calhoun County is bordered by
LaFayette County (north), Pontotoc County
(northeast), Chickasaw County (east),
Webster County (south), Grenada County
(southwest) and Yalobusha County (west).
