Chickasaw County
County History
Chickasaw County was
established February 9, 1836, during the administration of Gov. Charles
Lynch. It was named for the Chickasaw Indians and was part of the
territory ceded by that tribe in the treaty of Pontotoc, October 20,
1832. Indian philologists derive the word Chickasaw from chikasha
(rebellion), probably referring to the separation of the nation from the
Creeks and Choctaws. Portions have been taken from Chickasaw in the
formation of Clay, Webster and
Calhoun counties. Houston and Okolona are
the County seats. The county Courthouse and most of its records was
destroyed by fire in 1863. Other towns include New Houlka, Sparta, Trebloc and Woodland. Chickasaw County was the birthplace of
singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry, and served as the setting and
inspiration for many of her songs, including her biggest hit "Ode to
Billy Joe". As of 2000, its population was 19,440. Chickasaw County is
bordered by Pontotoc County (north),
Lee County (northeast), Monroe
County (east), Clay County (southeast),
Webster County (southwest) and
Calhoun County (west).

Regarding the above family,
Tess Griffin wrote on 19 Jul 2008:
"Anthony (Anthy) and Winnie (Baker) Crockett were in
our family. Beria (listed here as Bera) is one of their daughters.
Her oldest son's name was Cedric although sometimes they spelled it
Sedere. I see on this listing of the census his last name was
listed as Culpepper. I always heard of him as Cedric (or Sedere)
Thomas. I'm going to guess that the man we thought of as his father
was actually his step-father whom Beria married later (Rev. Marshall
Thomas). Cedric is now dead but he married a woman named Bernice and
had two children, Derrick and Alice.
"Most of this branch of the Crockett family relocated
to the Erie, PA area in the 40s or 50s. Our branch of the family
stayed in the Mississippi/Arkansas/Memphis area.
"Perhaps if anyone remembers a Cedric or Sedere, the
name Beria Crockett Thomas might shed some light on this. Beria was
a twin -- her twin sister's name was Ceria..." |
