Lee County
County History
Lee
County, taken from the eastern part of Pontotoc
County and the western part of Itawamba County, was established in
1866. It is named for General Robert E. Lee. The old brick court house,
erected in 1871, was burned in 1873. It was replaced by a brick
structure which was also destroyed by fire in 1904. As of 2000, Lee
County's population was 75,755 and is part of the Tupelo, Mississippi
Micropolitan Statistical Area. Well known as the the birthplace of Elvis
Presley, Tupelo is both the largest town and county seat of Lee County.
It is also the headquarters of the Natchez Trace Parkway, an elongated
historic national park that stretches from Natchez, Mississippi to
Nashville, Tennessee. Other towns in the county include Baldwyn, Guntown,
Nettleton, Plantersville, Saltillo, Shannon, Sherman and Verona. Lee
County is bordered by Prentiss County (north), Itawamba County (east),
Monroe County (southeast),
Chickasaw County (southwest),
Pontotoc County (west) and Union County
(northwest).
